Crime Checker launches free tool explaining criminal outcomes for England and Wales defendants
New AI tool describes likely offences, court routes, sentence risks and next steps in plain English — for people facing a criminal matter who want to understand the process before speaking to a solicitor.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — 1 July 2026
England and Wales — Crime Checker, a free AI-powered tool from Zayn Productions Ltd, has launched at crimechecker.co.uk for anyone in England or Wales facing a criminal matter who wants to understand what they are likely to be charged with, where the case will be heard and what the realistic outcomes are.
The tool is general information only and does not constitute legal advice. It is designed to reduce the anxiety and confusion that often precede proper legal consultation — not to replace a solicitor.
What the tool does
A user describes their situation in plain language. Crime Checker identifies the most likely offence under English and Welsh law, explains whether the matter would be heard in a magistrates' court or Crown Court (or both), outlines the realistic range of outcomes, and gives an indication of sentence risk on a five-tier scale. The result also covers what the person should do next — including when to request a duty solicitor and when legal aid is likely to apply.
The tool covers offences across the main categories of criminal law: driving offences, assault, theft, drugs, criminal damage, fraud, public order and more. It does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland, which have separate legal systems.
What it does not do
Crime Checker does not give legal advice. Every result includes a clear statement that it provides general information based on publicly available sources — Sentencing Council guidelines, the Magistrates' Court Sentencing Guidelines and Crown Prosecution Service charging guidance — and that only a qualified solicitor can advise on the specific circumstances of an individual case.
The tool abstains from producing a result in a small number of cases where confidence is insufficient. An abstain result directs the user immediately to seek professional advice, with information on free legal aid and duty solicitor rights.
Why this matters
Research by the Legal Services Consumer Panel found that a significant proportion of people facing criminal proceedings do not consult a solicitor until they are required to appear in court — often because they do not understand what they are facing or assume that early legal advice is expensive. Crime Checker is designed to close that information gap at the earliest stage, so that people arrive at their first solicitor meeting already understanding the process rather than starting from zero.
Access to the tool is free and anonymous. No name, address or contact details are required.
"The criminal justice system is intimidating, and that intimidation starts the moment someone realises they might be facing a charge. A lot of what makes it frightening is uncertainty about the process — not knowing what a summary offence means, not knowing why some cases go to Crown Court and others don't, not knowing whether a caution goes on a criminal record. Crime Checker is designed to answer those questions clearly, at no cost, so that people can make informed decisions about what to do next."
